How do you build a reading plan for AI research papers?

Choose a concrete problem rather than a broad field. Find one overview or entry paper, one or two turning-point papers, a recent comparison or application, and one item to reproduce or test. After each paper, keep only the questions that can change your next step in the route.

1. Start with a problem, not a popularity feed

How to make support answers verifiable is more useful than learn RAG because it determines what to read. A good question names a user, setting, and success condition.

Popular papers can supply leads, but they do not define your goal. Different goals need different foundations and current work.

2. Build a small route from four roles

An entry paper or survey establishes vocabulary. A turning-point paper explains why the path changed. A recent comparison shows today's trade-offs. A reproduction or application item brings the reading back to real constraints.

Limit the first route to four to six papers. Expand after you read based on blockers, evidence gaps, and new questions instead of saving fifty papers before completing one.

3. Update the question and stopping rule each round

Each note only needs the claim, strongest evidence, biggest limit, and the next step it changes. The next paper should answer a question still open.

Stop a round when you can make the current decision or when new papers no longer change your judgment. A reading plan serves action; it is not an endlessly growing list.
