How should you read the Related Work section of an AI paper?

First see how the authors group prior work, then identify the comparison used for each group, and finally test whether the claimed gap holds. Follow citations that can change your view of method origin, baseline fairness, or novelty. Keep broad background references in a parking list.

Recover the research map drawn by the authors

Related work is often grouped by method family, task, dataset, or time. Reduce each subsection to one line stating what that group solves and which assumptions it shares.

The grouping reflects the authors' point of view. Search independently when a key paper sits at the edge of a category or a whole research line is absent.

Check whether comparisons use the same dimensions

A paper may compare one family by accuracy while criticizing another for cost or scalability. List the dimensions and check whether the routes use similar tasks, data, and resources.

Pay attention to claims such as first, unlike all prior methods, or previously impossible. Opening the two or three closest predecessors is usually more useful than reading ten background citations.

Follow only citations that can change a judgment

Return to the source when the core mechanism came from it, another paper created the key data, or a strong baseline setup is compressed into one sentence. Definitions and broad context can wait.

Before opening a citation, write the question it may answer. Bring the answer back to the current paper so related work does not become endless browsing.

  4. Does a source support the claimed gap?
  5. Which citation can change my view of novelty or baselines?
