How do you keep track of an AI research topic without reading papers every day?
Choose three to five seed papers that represent the problem, methods, and evaluation. Follow their references backward and citations forward. Save a fixed search query, collect candidates weekly, and update an evidence table monthly. Classify new work as a method change, data change, reproduction, or counterexample before deciding to read it deeply.
Set boundaries with a small seed set
Seeds should cover a foundational work, a current strong baseline, and a recent change. Record the problem, key assumption, and evaluation used by each one.
If all seeds come from one author group or venue, add another research line. The starting map shapes later recommendations and citation chains.
Combine saved searches with citation tracing
Keep keywords, synonyms, task names, method names, and the search date. Backward citations find origins, while forward citations find reproductions, improvements, and counterexamples.
Author, lab, dataset, and benchmark pages provide signals, but social attention is not evidence. Return to abstracts, experiments, and sources before adding a paper to the map.
Update the evidence table on a fixed cadence
Collect and triage weekly, then batch deeper reading and map updates monthly. For each candidate, write one sentence on how it might change the current view.
Label new work as method, data, evaluation, reproduction, negative result, or application. If it changes no claim, evidence, or boundary, save the link without writing a long note.
